Creating a Lighter, Brighter Home That’ll Sell Faster

Posted on December 31, 2019

If you’re busy preparing your property for sale, then you’re certain to have 101 things running through your mind. Making sure your property appeals to potential buyers is a top priority, and whilst every purchaser is different, there are some things that everyone wants when buying their next home. Good availability of natural light for instance is something that every buyer desires and looks for when viewing properties.

According to the Royal Institute of British Architects’ recently launched campaign ‘HomeWise’, 63% rate natural light as the most important aspect of a home. A fact that may not be welcome news as you prepare to sell your property at the dullest time of year. Use the following steps to create a lighter, brighter home that you can proudly showcase to potential buyers…

Rethink window treatments

Make natural light more available within your home by modifying your window coverings. Heavy curtains that are artfully draped across your windows may look pretty but they limit natural light in the home. Open those curtains and blinds wide to let as much light in as possible. Swap darker coloured treatments for lighter coloured, lightweight designs to increase that open and airy feeling.

Upgrade your lighting

If you don’t have a lot of natural light to play with, then upping the availability of artificial light will do the trick. Lighting makes a huge difference to the appearance of your home, whatever season you’re selling in.

Rethink your home’s lighting scheme and upgrade your fittings. Think carefully about the positioning of your new lighting. The higher lights are hung, the better they’re able to simulate the presence of natural light. Using recessed light in cabinets can also add extra brightness to illuminate the darkest of rooms.

Use mirrors in your décor

A strategically placed mirror can instantly brighten a room. Rooms abundant in natural light can be illuminated further with mirrors too. Place your mirror (or mirrors) close to windows and doors to ensure natural and artificial light can bounce off its surface. Adding plants to your décor can also add vibrancy.

Add a lick of paint

Refreshing rooms with a lick of paint is a DIY task many property owners undertake in the weeks before their home is listed for sale. When picking the perfect palette, avoid choosing darker colours. Instead opt for light, neutral shades to present your home as a bright and beautiful place to live.
